Time to say "Salute" to Robert L. Carver, PhD! Jeff and I got to join with his parents and Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Bob to celebrate a major accomplishment for Bobby, Jeff's brother. He walked the stage at Rice University in Houston, TX on a rainy Saturday accepting his diploma (sheepskin is in the mail) for a PhD in Physics. The Commencement speaker was Dr. Muhammad Yunus whose story was fascinating to me. Though I didn't fully agree with everything he said, I was impressed and have a great deal of respect for what he has done with his life. Basically, he saw a need and listened to people and with persistance and putting intentions into action, he has helped many poor people find a way out of poverty and into jobs or at least a better financial situation and won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.
Bobby started a post-doc position at Mary Byrd Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge, LA about 6 months ago doing medical physics. Very exciting! Obtaining his PhD was a long hard road and one of perseverance and character! We applaud you Bobby and are so proud! No one knows what it is like to go down that intellectual highway that is never 4 lanes and newly paved. Lots of potholes, turns and long drives in the middle of the night! For those who have completed post-graduate education, you know the deep sigh of relief combined with joy and sense of closure Bobby felt! As you read this, pause a moment and clap for him at your computer! :)) Once again, Congratulations Bobby! Celebration dinner at Flemings was a great highlight and the Lava Cake was incredible. I don't think we'd ever seen Bobby eat so much!
