March Highlights

Ladies and Gentleman, let's give a standing ovation for DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME! Wahooo! Don't know about you, but I love more sunshine! Have you noticed the dogwoods and azaleas and the "yellow dust", aka pollen?! Are you effected by pollen? Cathy coughed for 2 weeks; Jeff never sneezed.

Other Highlights: Cathy spent 3 days in sunny Orlando for the International Seating Symposium where I get to see and hear about all the amazing advances in technology and research for adaptive equipment, namely wheelchairs for people with disabilities. One of my favorite meetings and I went with my boss. I am fortunate to have a great boss that is great to travel with and I respect. She's been doing this for over 30 years! Thanks, Gayle, for all you do!

Have you ever seen Cirque de Soleil? Jeff and I saw Jungle Fantasy and were amazed by the costumes and the coordination, core strength, balance feats, and pure Gumby-like flexibility of the contortionists. There is actually a school for contortionism that you can go to starting at age 3! The body is amazing in what it can be trained to do. Our bodies are a gift!

We visited the first capital of the USA - Philadelphia, PA. Cathy had a meeting up there and Jeff tagged along. Took a bus tour of the city to get the highlights. Definitely the way to see a town when you only have a short time. March Madness had begun as we saw teams from American University and Villanova staying in the area. Highlights were the "Rocky Steps" The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. We heard all about William Penn and Ben Franklin. What did Ben not do? What and impressive man! Makes me thankful for our heritage! Didn't get a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich but did try the pretzels. Very good!

We had a visit from Cathy's (my) dad. He got to see our new house for the first time. We took him to UAB to see where I work. He got to see the wheelchair clinic and where we started the new Locomotor Training program. We then got him out to toss the softball with us since we are in "training" to play with the Hinton Hitmen (our coed team with our Sunday School class). It was fun reliving the days when dad used to take me out to the park on Sunday afternoons and hit some "grounders" and teach me fundamentals of throwing, catching and hitting. Sweet memories! Thanks, dad! Enjoyed great conversation and quality time hanging out. Dad is a "simple man"!

Last weekend we enjoyed 2 gorgeous days of skiing at Breckenridge, CO. There's something majestic and glorious about the Rocky Mountains. It was a welcomed trip that was highlighted of memories of skiing until our legs were burning, quiet rides of the lift soaking in the scenery, meeting quite a variety of people riding up the lift, taking note of where people are from working the lifts (noticed one ski bum from Olive Branch, MS working next to a guy from London). Ever noticed what the ski worker's tan is like? Brown face, racoon eyes and brown hands - not "cool" to wear gloves when you work the lifts. We recommend Beaujo's Pizza in Idaho Springs, CO when you are returning to Denver after a full day of skiing. Best pizza we've ever eaten! We were challenged by how environmentally friendly people in Colorado are. one of the ski lifts was powered by wind power and the pizza place had solar panels on the roof. In these times, I am reading a lot more ideas on how to be "green". Will post pix soon!

Hope all is well with everyone!
